Question:

Why is my washing machine putting holes in my clothes?

I keep finding holes, big ones, in my clothes. Just today I took my sons Carharrt pants, the thick ones, out and the front of them were full of large holes. The holes were not there when added to laundry. This was the only fatality of this load. I today noticed my daughter Gap zip hoody had two holes in it. One larger one smaller. I dont get it. These are higher quality clothes. My hubbys t shirts get it all the time and so do some of our undies. Mine too (blush) I use warm water, Gain detergent and Downy fabric softner. And the machine is the top loading kind. If you can help me out here I would appreciate it. Thanks

  1. Gently run your hand around the inside of the washer tub to see if there is anything there that can catch the clothing. Don't miss a single inch of the interior when you check it.

If you find anything that is not smooth, this may be your problem.

The spindle in the center may be loose and letting some of the clothing get caught underneath it. Some washers that up a pumping action, have caused wear and tear on clothing . (Center spindle pumps up and down as clothing washes.) Check the spindle  to make sure it is secure.

Not really sure why the large items are being affected but if the washer is too full then the clothing will rub against the top of the tub and cause some wear and tear this way.

With the new styles of underwear today, very light weigh,  these would be easy to slide under the edge of the spindle and get caught.

They can also float to  the top of the washer if too full and this could be rubbing and causing the problem.

If you have ties/strings that are on the items, they maybe getting wrapped around the spindle as well.

Detergent really should not be the problem either. Only an acid would cause holes in clothing.

Unless you added something that would cause a chemical reaction to  some of the materials, but that would be very, very rare and would not be affecting all the items you have mentioned.

I would be willing to be you are filling the washer too high or there is something wrong with the spindle of the washer.

I bet most people overload the washing machines. I do at times and I know better..lol

Pile in the clothing loosely but not all the way to the top of the spindle. After the clothing is  wet these will pack down and you may think you are not washing enough but at least if this is the problem, it will cease.

If the washer is new, call whomever you purchase it from and see what they say.

If you try putting in smaller load and you found nothing wrong with the spindle, you really need to get this checked. It is not normal clothing to get holes from just being washed.

    Good luck.

  2. check to make sure there is nothing stuck in one of the drain holes in your washer tub

  3. dont use your washing machine, wear your clothes and get someone to hose you down in the yard

  4. Maybe there is something wrong with the detergent you are using, try someother detergent.
