Question:

Why is my window unit dripping water into the house?

The unit is level and normally the water would drip from the back outside. But now it is starting to leak inside. I have sheet rock walls and you can imagine what the water is doing to it. Should I tilt it back a little? Will it hurt the unit?

  1. There are two tubes or channels on the inside section where the water flows to the back. These have to be small to prevent air from coming in to the inside. They are likely dirty, plugged with lint, and need cleaning. It may mean removing it from the window and removing the case.

    Good Luck.

  2. The drain is set up so if tilted back to the outdoor, the water can run out. If it is already tilted, the drain hole under the evaporator (indoor coil) is plugged.

  3. mine started to do that and when the air conditioning guy came he said it was because I had not been maintaining the unit properly.  Essentially the insides were dirty.  He told me that I should have had it serviced at least once a year. You might have to call in the "experts"

  4. It just needs to tip back- Its got letting the water reach the drain holes

  5. make sure you dont have any leafs or debree clogging the weep holes on your unit and if not then tip the unit back a little to allow gravity to do its thing . units do not need to be level to work properly.

  6. If you can, look on the outside to see if something has blocked off the drain hose (or whatever it drains thru).

If that's not possible, can you take it out of the window to check it?

In the end, have it tilted slightly down on the outside.  But try to find the reason for the indoor drio first.

    Good luck
