Question:

Why is my wireless router making my DSL internet slow?

I have a desktop and a laptop. My desktop is in another room right next to my room and my laptop is in my room. When I had the DSL internet connected directly to the desktop it was really fast. But then I decided to buy a laptop so I bought a Belkin Wireless G Router so I could share the DSL internet. Well when I connected the wireless router, the internet on my desktop seems much slower than when I had before. The internet on my laptop is slow too. Why is this? Is the wireless router not a good idea to have? Would a wired router be better and faster? I want the internet to be fast on both my laptop and desktop.

  1. You more than likely are using a router with a 802.11B or older G standard.  To get the speed, you need to upgrade to g with mimo or n.

  2. If you are doing stuff on both computers then you will use more bandwidth hence it will be slower.

Belkin is shite, so that could also be a factor. Plus wireless has to do encryption so that can slow things down a little as well depending on what security you are using.

Hardwired is always quicker even though both are way faster than your internet connection... wireless always has some lag.

  3. When you share bandwidth it is slower than just one person using it.

    Wired is faster than wireless

The router itself doesn't slow anything down.

You could wire to the wire and it would be faster than wireless but you would lose the ability to move around.

  4. Hi, a most common problem we have found (I work for a wireless ISP) is that people can hack into your wireless network if you have set any security on the wiureless.

The second problem is your wireless connection between the router and your PC/Laptop is not really good for many reasons.

    1. Interference from other Wi-Fi devices such as any 2.4/5.8G based devices in your home. or there are too many obstacles between your router and laptop.

For the 1st issue, please secure your wireless router with WEP or WPA encryption. The product document normally guides you how to set these. WPA is more prefered as it is more secured than WEP. Use WPA2 if your PC/Notbook wireless adpator supports it.

For the secod issue, you can try changing the radio channels from your router. Most default channel is 6 and for many devices in your home it could be 6 and that can cause interference.

Also make sure that you have good reception at the PC/Laptop (see if the signal strength is Excellent / Good). if not you will have to re-locate the router.

well, another note: if you are sharing internet, and using two PCs at the same time, you know it slows down the internet.

  5. Do you have security on your wireless network?  If you dont require a password for your wireless, you could be providing internet to your neighborhood!  I wouldn't anticipate a wired router being any faster. Double check that the speed when directly connected to the modem is faster than through the router, if its slow straight from the modem call your ISP.
