Question:

Why is nasty water coming up the sink?

I have the dish washer on and for some reason nasty greyish water is coming up the disposal side of the sink. I ran the disposal before the wash started, I ran it when the water was coming up out of it. The disposal is crud free. I hope the water wont overflow if I leave the house. What is wrong with it.

  1. Nasty water is coming up the pipe in the sink, because you have a  major problem with your drain pipes going to your sewer/septic system.  The dishwasher literally pumps water out of itself and into other areas.  So, your pipes either need to be cleaned or enlarged.  You need to call a plumber or a good friend.

  2. i agree with others saying call a plumber.  there is a blockage somewhere preventing the dishwasher water from running out.  the only "easy" thing you can try is to open up the trap (U shaped pipe under the sink drain) and make sure there is nothing clogging it.  my sister had this happen once before and there were toys in the trap (darn kids)

  3. prob a clog in the pipe.  It will also do it if you have a plate or something sitting over the drain of the other sink.  Something to do with air flow.

  4. check the drain hose from the diswasher that connects to the drain line under the sink. The hose should go up higher than the sink drain to  create a air gap that acts like a trap to keep the discharge water from coming  into the sink

  5. There is an obstruction in the sewer line after the sink and washer sewage line meet. it is only a partial obstruction.  the heavy flow of water from the washer is just enough to back it up and the sink is probably the next lowest spot.  i would call a plummer to snake the line if you dont know what your doing.  or you can try to unclog the line yourself.
