Plate tectonic movements keep soil fertile and have expand biodiversity. The underlying mantle and core movements also provide magnetic effects we experience in everyday life. Earthquakes are responsible in part (along with meterological effects and other geophysical effects) responsible for the shapes of mountains and valleys. They also recycle worn out rocks and materials to provide new and better ones. They play a key factor in the creation and development of life.

If there is a "why" then perhaps its because of that.
