  1. Print newspapers will be gone in 8-10 years. They have become a senseless waste of trees. Recent layoffs at several major newspapers are a clear signal of the beginning of the end.

  2. I think it is the fact that it is very tactile and there is nothing like opening a crisp new newspaper

  3. Newspapers are important because they employ reporters.

People fear the demise of newspapers might destroy the intellectual massing of journalists in the old city room or news room.

The main hope is that newspapers will continue to make the transition to new media with the bulk of their intellectual capital intact.

Newspapers send reporters to government meetings, write FOIA requests, knock on doors, and collect and analyze information which broadcast news organizations are not staffed to do.  Compare the number of local newspaper  reporters to the journalistic staff of a local television station to see the wide disparity.

Newspapers today have declining circulations but are reaching more people via the Internet, and the convergence of technology with reporters carrying video cams.

The newspapers of industrialized nations were dangerously slow in adapting to new technologies and are now scrambling to change.  And some have already been lost and others are in danger of collapsing.

If the old news room or current news center is lost, then the public will suffer from the destruction of this massing of journalistic intellectual capital.

I hope this answer helps you.

  4. I think it's more of a case of an old habit dying hard.

  5. I am surprised they are still around. Our family stopped subscribing to them years ago in favour of internet news sources. They are a waste of trees.

  6. if you run out of toilet paper

  7. With a newpaper I can chose the stories I want to read based on my interest and do not have to listen to all the chatty garbage we get on TV news.

Internet news is good, but it doesn't give you the chance to scan pieces of an article without first making the choice to open it.
