I would say human rights issues should always take the upper hand when not only are people dying but we are getting screwed and giving away our national security to China one t.v at a time.

  1. That's what I would like to know, (not just during the games, but all of the time!) especially since the violations are so in our face. Yes, human rights and suffering are much more important than games anywhere, anytime.

  2. The Olympics shouldn't be intertwined with politics.  It takes away from the meaning and purpose of the games.  China is definitely not the only one out there violating human rights.  I definitely don't think we're "giving away our national security to China one TV at a time".  I think that's a little silly.

  3. How do you mean, like the USA & the UK in Iraq, or the Russians invading another country. Do people want everyone to jump on the bandwagon. At least the Olympics can go someway to having harmony in the world. God knows we need some!

  4. The olympics is a time when countries are supposed to set aside differences and participate in a non-biased sporting event so that the world may enjoy a time of semi harmony. When the olympics are over polititians can get back to what they were doing... absolutely nothing, only then can we just forget about the whole thing and stop trying to play world police and try to fix our own problems. As for you questionare I believe your mind has been brainwashed by the media in an attempt to make you think we don't have those type of problems in our own country.

  5. Why would they suddenly start now? China is one of those countries that get a pass on most issues like this. (Especially pollution) The rest of the globe is expected to adhere to these cafe' standards, but they get a permission slip to do whatever they want. A major reason we won't sign that dumbazz Kyoto treaty. It lets countries like China, India, Mexico, and other "developing" countries go ahead and spew all the garbage they want, while we wreck our economies trying to adhere to draconian policies.

  6. Because it's the Olympics, an international sporting contest. Political issues have their places, same as everything else. Would you go to a concert or football match and start ranting about issues such as the smoking ban or hunting .etc.?! EXACTLY, so get a life.

  7. The Chinese government always receive negative criticism regarding their human rights policy.  But one thing we all need to understand (at least try to) is the fact that China has the largest population in the world.  Most of them are really poor.  If you are the Chinese government, how would you govern the nation?  What policy will you set to prevent crimes, when majority of the citizens are in poverty?

Other nations that criticize how bad the Chinese government are with human rights policy just simply never thought about governing 1.3 billion people.  And if they try, they will be really BAD at it.

  8. The 'human rights' and 'pollution' issues are largely Western propaganda, designed to deflect attention from shortcomings in the West.

The US remains the world's largest polluter, and it's record on human rights, even within it's own borders, is questionable at best.

  9. i believe this is getting more talk because of the olympics. Everyday we hear about another protester being arrested and deported.

however, it takes the people of the united states writing to their congressmen/women for them to take any kind of action on china. There are many blogs out there that have pre-written letters discussing the violations of human rights in china, and all you have to do is sign them and email them to your elected officials.

I boycotted the olympics because it was in china, and unfortunatly, our olympians didnt do the same.
