  1. a few players in the late 70s were in a car accident and lost skin in that area hence the name the shin boners

  2. in the early days nth were considered un-financial which resulted in them being held back from joining the newly formed VFL plus they had a reputation for hooliganism resulting in the tag (shinboners).

  3. I heard that there were a lot of butchers and stuff around the north melbourne area. Thats why they were called the shin boners. Apparantly Denis Pagan revived the old name during the 90s and it symbolises the never die attitude of the Kangaroos. I think it works because considering the financial struggles of the club, they have been as successful as those bigger victorian clubs. Its really become a cultural thing.

  4. i always thought it meant that because some of there players over the past years have been so couragous like hard man glen archer(shin ***** of the century if im not mistaken)

  5. It was their old name, before the 1950's. There used to be a lot of abattoirs and butchers in the area and butchers around the ground would put out shin bones in Nth Melbourne colours. One rumour is that they were a dirty, physical team, ie. kicking their opponents in the shins. But it has come to mean a never say die spirit.

  6. Timeponderer is correct.

  7. That's not their nickname, Their nickname is "Kangaroos"
