  1. let's put it this way......."the sun never sets on the british empire, because god does'nt trust them in the dark"!!!!!!

  2. Because at one time the whole of Ireland was part of the UK just as Wales is. I forget the date but way back the Irish wanted Independence from the UK, They failed to get total Independence but they did gain a partial Independence because the British government refused to give up what is now Northern Ireland. There were two reasons for this refusal,1/ the majority of people in the north were not true Irish, they were scots and these scots wanted to remain part of the UK, 2/ One of the greatest assets in northern Ireland was the HARLAND AND WOLF SHIPYARD this was one of the biggest shipbuilding yards in the world at the time and the British government was unwilling to give it up.

  3. As other people have said - The whole island was part of the UK until 1921 when it was called for Home Rule.

The country was then divided as the maily protestant counties of Fermanagh, Armagh, Tyrone, Londonderry/Derry, Antrim and Down wanted to remain part of the UK

Thats the way it was then, and that is the way it still is today, there will only be a united Ireland if the citizens of Northern Ireland vote for it, which is highly unlikely to happen.

Citizens of Northern Ireland can hold a British or Irish passport, or Both.

We declare our Nationality as being British, Irish, Northern Irish, and some people would say Ulster Scots.

Anyone who refers to Northern Ireland as a province is totally incorrect.

Northern Ireland is a COUNTRY which happens to lie within the boundaries of the province of Ulster - there are three counties within Ulster which belong to the Republic of Ireland.

Also please disregard xxSimple's answer as is is extremely narrow minded.

  4. i think i'm right in saying that it's referred to as northern ireland coz parts of ulster are in the republic, donegal, cavan, monaghan

  5. OK i live in northern ireland and i can tell you that the reason for it is back in the World Wars when England was taking over all the countries even powerful countries like america they took all of Ireland (It used to be a whole country) then England failed and had to give America back and all the rest of the countries they took. However when Giving Back Ireland they decided they would either give back the North or the south and the South signed an agreement to let them keep the north. That is why we are part of the United Kingdom.

  6. Once the island of Ireland was all one country, through many years of wars between the English and the Irish the English finally got a foot hold on the island and eventually dominated it by implanting English and Scottish lords to oversee the country,

Over the centuries the Irish fought back until in the late 1920s the UK government (under pressure) gave independence to the southern portion which was by then dominated by Catholic Irish staunchly loyal to the Pope and the Irish culture and heritage, this left the UK government with control over the northern province which was populated by mainly Protestants and those fiercely loyal to the UK crown,

  7. Because of Ireland's history, the country is split into two parts, Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.

I'm not too sure why NI is part of the UK, maybe it's a political thing?

  8. The short version is that following the Irish War for Independence as part of the Anglo Irish Treaty, the six counties of Northern Ireland became part of the UK and the 26 counties which formed the Irish Free State became 'independent' - it remained under British dominion with the Monarch as Head of State, with the Monarch's representative residing in the country and Great Britain leadind on foreign policy.

The longish version: from 1919 to 1921, Irish Republicans fought what is known as the War for Independence in the Republic of Ireland and as part of the treaty with the British (known as the Anglo Irish Treaty), the Irish Free State came into existence which consisted of 26 counties which were predominantly Catholic and six counties of Ulster, Fermanagh, Armagh, Tyrone, Derry (Londonderry, name depends on your political inclination), Antrim and Down.  Under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Agreement a Boundary Commission was set up to to draw the territorial boundaries between the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland, the Boundary Commission came down on the side of Great Britain and the wishes of the majority Protestant population in the six counties.  If they had taken all 9 counties of Ulster into Northern Ireland, there would have been an even balance between the Catholics and Protestants.

It wasn't until 1949, what became the Republic of Ireland formally broke all ties with the UK and became an independent nation.

To explain how this adversity between the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland came about you need to go back into Irish history to the 'conquest' and the plantations.  Wikipedia has some good information on how the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland came into existence.

  9. SCOTLAND EVEN THO THAT HAVE INDEPENDANCE ITS S STILL OWNED BY BRITAIN  ............SUCKS  c**p.

  10. Its not all northern ireland, it is just 6 of our counties that are governed by the UK's government. it is alll to do with history because there was a lot of wars back then over religion, catholics and protestants and the english protestants wanted to take over ireland by invading it, but ireland fought back but sadly, they still won over 6 counties but they had a choice, either to give the enlglish all 32 counties or just 6...so obviosuly, they chose 6.

it just so happnes that those 6 counties were in the northern part of ireland but there are OTHER counties in northern ireland that are not governed by the UK,

Its all to do with history :(

That is the reason why it is said that catholics and protestants hate eachother...because the english protestants stole 6 of our counties

but some counties in the north part are in the republic, donegal, cavan an monaghan. i dunno if you are from ireland? but those 3 counties and the 6 counties england stole are all in a province called ulster, i.e the northern bit of ireland...but its not ALL governed by the UK..if you get what i mean..

  11. Good point. Why is the south not part of the Uk also.? It should be and until 1921 it was . Ireland was before 1921 all British However after 1921 Britain let the southern part rule itself . The northern part very strongly wished to continue as it was so remained part of the UK. Since then there has been numerous bombings by the IRA to try to force the British people in north  to become Irish but of course being British they all said NO and eventually the IRA surrendered their weapons leading to the Good Friday agreement in 1998.Sadly the people in the south have not been given a recent vote to see if they would like to become part of the Uk again or even if the Uk would let them!
