Question:

Why is not a dynamic IP?

I bought a wireless router and connect it with my cable modem and PC. My PC can connect with the wireless router successfully, but I can not visit the Internet. Then I check the setup page of the router, and there is a tool to test the type of the connection to the Internet in the router. I notice that when the type of the connection is DHCP IP, I can visit the Internet; when the type is Fixed IP, I can not. I also try to connect my pc to the modem directly, and it is always successful. ISP did not give me any account or password. So i think the type should always be DHCP. I wonder why the type will change? or there is something wrong with my router?

  1. Nothing wrong with router. Dynamic is when the ip address is assigned by your provider ..That works..

Static is when you choose an ip address, and that may not work with your provider..

If it ain't broke,, don't fix it..

You figured it out on your own.....

  2. Your settings need to be put to DHCP.  DHCP assigns your computer an IP address.  If you pay for a static IP address (normally it's a few dollars more per month), you could use fixed IP instead.  Some people need the feature, others don't.  There's nothing wrong with your router.

  3. You must use DHCP, because this way your router will get the correct settings from your ISP and your PC will get the correct settings from the router. DHCP means your machine will ask the ISP server for a valid IP address. Then your PC will ask the router for an IP address. Fixed IPs are only used in certain secure applications and are not normally used in the home.
