Why is organic cotton slightly more expensive?

  1. If organic products were cheaper and easier to produce then all farmers would grow their cotton organically. Going organic is more expensive for the farmers so the only incentive for them to do so is to charge a premium on the cotton.


  2. Organic cotton is expensive to produce. Generally, cotton cultivation needs more amount of chemicals than the other crops.

    Organic cotton is produced without the use of pesticides and from untreated seeds. Organic farming also requires crop rotation and hence it takes painful and intensive labor.

    Organic cotton has still a very small market. The same manufacturing facilities are used for both conventional cotton and organic cotton processing. But before organic cotton can be processed, the cotton gin and machines have to be cleaned and sanitized upping the processing costs.

    And another sad reason is that it costs the small organic farmers double the price to ship, market and advertise their wares.

    If  people opt for products made of organic cotton then these huge gaps in prices will be filled and this will help our environment to some extent.

  3. The plants only drink bottled purified water... lol
