Why is our generation called "Generation Y"?

so why was the previous generation called generation Y?

i think its just because our generation was called generation X. we were seen as disaffected youths who saw no future for ourselves because the country was in grip of recession nd there was mass unemployment. people like kurt cobain were seen as cultural icons and spokespeople for us. by the way i always had a job and kept walking out of 1 job into another and i nevr felt especially disaffected its just how the media portrayed us. we were also seen as pill popping ravers who spent our nights going around the country looking for illegal raves which personally was probably nearer the truth lol

because as time continues on the world grows increasingly worse and quite a large amount of people borne in 1980+ wear ther trousers lower than what is sanitary thus revealing the top of their @$$ crack  that creates the image of a Y its really quite stupid but it is "the norm" unless parents begin to raise their children in a more sensitive wholsome and uplifting manner the future will only get progressingly worse.

No, really, it's just because we come after "Generation X" (a term popularized by author D. Coupland in his 1991 book Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture).

Believe it or not we are also known as the "Echo Boomers" (relates to the size of our generation and its relation to the Baby boomers generation), the Backpack Generation, and the "Millennials" (relates to our young age during the turn of the millennium).

Fun Fact: Generation Y is anyone born between 1980-1994.

the term Generation Y was originally derived from the children of the War Generation ( those born in the 1940's) these were termed W-Generation their children Generation X and their Children Generation Y and so on.

although this has now taken  on a 20 year periods with their arbitrary dates and descriptive texts.

Generation Z 2001 -2020  (new millennium or Internet Generation)

Generation Y 1981- 2000   (min baby boom)

Generation X 1961 - 1980  (baby boomer)
