Why is ovechkin NOT poster boy for nhl?

What I mean is why is Ovechkin not geting more publicity, is it becasue he is russian, or that his english will prob never be perfect. He is very outgoing and a huge goof ball. BEYOND BETTER THEN CRYSBY. Gretsky once thought sydney would break his records, but now he thinks ovechkin will break his records. He should have more attention. He has his own clothes line, facebook page, myspace, youtube hit and NHL GREAT already at 23, but he isnt getting enough in the US, only internet and all of russia.

Okay, first of all, it's S-I-D-N-E-Y. He isn't a city in Australia. Second of all, Ovechkin gets plenty of publicity. If you go onto nhl.com, the advertisement on the top shows Ovie, not Crosby. If you really don't like Sidney (which you obviously do), then just ignore it whenever you hear some news about him. It's not his fault that he gets more coverage than Alex.

I like Ovechkin better then Crosby, and I'm a Maritime Canadian,they won't put him as the poster boy because they want to promote a Canadian, it's kind of what they did with Alexandre Daigle in '94, when Yashin had way more points then Daigle, they still were promoting Daigle to be rookie of the year, but Yashin won eventually..

it's basicially because he's Canadian.

it's ok for more than 1 person to come along in the upcoming decades and break gretzky's records.  i'm sure he didn't think 2 players could fight each other for them at the same time though.

i don't get why it has to be crosby or AO.  they're BOTH GREAT PLAYERS IN THEIR OWN WAY.  be glad you are witnessing both of them at their prime play against each other and duel it out for record setting years.  each will push the other to play at their best at all times.  

sid's the good-looking, young, breakout star that the media loves to feed off of.  AO is just as good, but isn't as attractive which, as you should know these days, doesn't bode well in the media.  i mean for christs' sake, even the chinese wouldn't let the little ugly girl who actually sang the opening song at the olympics appear.  they had a cuter girl lip sync.  it's all about being able to identify with the person. more people can identify with sid.

so relax there chief.  it's not the end of the world, ya know.  AO will get his due.

Alek is playing Second Fiddle behind Crosby. He is just letting the HYPE take its course. then it well die down. and his time well be next. And I might add that People have a hard time Saying and spelling Alek first and last name right. And his English is not that bad..

I feel your frustration also. I am a huge Caps fan myself.  Like was mentioned earlier, REAL fans that know and love the sport for what it is and not bandwagon jokes that know nothing about the sport, know where the authentic long haul talent is. P.S it is with the person that is locked into a $124 million dollar contract. Funny how someone would have that much faith with someone that is NOT the poster boy and poster boy gets what, $43.5 million. See where the REAL loyalties are, based on talent?

To be completely honest, I do agree with you that it's because Ovechkin's not from the US or Canada and that he doesn't speak English very well.  The NHL wants to promote someone who hits close to home to most of it's fans, and that means a player who's from the same country they are - especially Canada - to make the fans proud.  Not to mention Crosby can speak perfect English, so he would be better at promotions, television ads, and things like that.

I personally prefer Ovechkin over Crosby, but I do see why the NHL would promote Crosby over him.  It's sad, but it's the truth.

wow there ranting never really changes anybody's opinions though ovie is better than crosby the nhl refuses to believe it. Crosby is a canadien and the nhl took notice of him first. Trust me he's getting attention where it matters in DC and in russia at really thats all he needs

It's not because he is Russian, it's because Sid the Kid was made the NHL poster boy even before both of these 2 hockey players started there careers and nobody even knew who Alex O was until he had a season(first season) that was much better than that of Sid the Kid. Alex O, first season performance surprised all of us especially when Alex O won Rookie of the Year.

If anything the NHL doesn't need to make Alex O the poster player for the NHL since Alex O made himself a bigger star in the NHL than what the league can do for him.

Bettman and the NHL are following the NBA's lead in promoting individual players over both the game and the teams - a real shame since unlike basketball, hockey isn't about individual match-ups.

Perhaps Ovechkin isn't getting as much attention as Crosby, but he's certainly getting more than anyone else in the league. He's really one of two poster boys, and I think that's elite enough.

As it stands, Ovechkin gets the hard core, long time hockey fans, while Crosby tends to get the new ones... I think that speaks volumes.
