Question:

Why is part of my power out and how can I fix it?

The power in about half of my room is totally out. The lights don't work, almost nothing works, just one electrical plug happens to work. We've already checked the circuit breakers. What are possible causes for this? Also, how would I fix this?

  1. Call an electrician if all the circuit breakers are fine.

  2. Has your utility company worked on the power lines lately? Several years ago, after a hurricane, the power company came out and rewired our destroyed power lines. Unfortunately the job was done wrong and I experienced the same thing, except for the fact it was half of my house. The word 'out of phase' comes to mind, but I cannot remember whether that was the problem or not. Your other possibility is a faulty circuit breaker which would require an electrician to replace. They do go bad. I  didn't even think about the GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) as mentioned previously; had that problem also.

  3. better to call an electrian it could be a break in the line for a dozen of reasons but no further inspection or resolution of this problem could cause a fire.

  4. More than likely you have a GFCI in the bathroom or kitchen that has tripped. These great safety devices protect several devices downline from themselves.  Push the test button on each one and then the reset button.  There should be one in the bathroom, 2 in the kitchen, one outdoors and one in the garage.  Check them all first, then if the problem is not solved, call a qualified professional electrician.  There is a chance you have a wiring problem. Usually the problem is the GFCI, then a faulty breaker, then a loose wire or connection. The least problem a broken wire inside a wall.  After you have reset the outlets and breakers, call a qualified professional electrician.
