  1. Take the coral reef bleaching for example (and there are a lot of sites where you can read about this, so it should be easy to relate to different systems).  The reefs are becoming bleached for various reasons, among the temperature in the water changing due to global warming and pollution.  Think about a reef and all of the organisms growing on it.  Then think of the fish that the reef supports, protects, and also feeds.  Then think of predators that want those fish.  If there is pollution and global warming (supporting the belief that our behavior is the cause to it's increasing speed), then the reefs bleach and cannot support their habitat.  The organisms die, the fish don't come around, and the larger predators don't know where to find the fish.  So, maybe a species dies off, or maybe the fish have to move on to a different system to find food or adapt somehow.  You can apply it to any ecological system and see how balance is thrown off.  Think of food cycles and what depends on what to survive, from plant life to animal life, etc, and what not protecting the environment causes.

  2. because we are destroying it, along with everything in it.

  3. Protection of the environment means that sudden and drastic changes in the environment are prevented, or in other words, that current balance in the various ecological niches is not disturbed.

maintenance of ecological balance is important, since most forms of life, fauna and flora (animals and vegetation) find it difficult to adapt to sudden changes in the conditions to which they are adapted, if these changes are sudden, very substantial and stay for a long time, most forms of life become extinct, since they can not adapt and can not migrate.

Even human population, especially in underdeveloped countries, find it hard to adapt and millions of these poor people die, for example when there was a 10 years drought in the Sahel (the countries in Africa south of the Sahara desert) millions die, we still remember the starving and dead children of Ethiopia.
