  1. When the early pilgrams left Europe, most of it was to escape religious persecution. The puritans quickly established their own religious standard including laws forcing people to obey, and harse punishment for disobeying.

    After the revolution, and independence was declared, the revolutionists were very careful to insist in the new American constitution, no religion, puritan, Christian, Catholic, Jewish, NO religion shall be established recognizing ANY one faith, any religious practices, or beliefs as an official religion the government will force upon anyone.

    No longer having the ability to force their religion on people, it because purely a choice. And the majority of people chose not to participate in the puritan practice.
