Why is quartz one of the most common minerals found in sedimentary rocks?

  1. Not only because it's the most common (which it is), but the hardness of the mineral (7 on the Mohs scale) makes it resistant to being worn down as it gets tumbled against other rocks in a stream or river.  It's also fairly resistant to chemical decomposition.


  2. Because it is the single most common mineral in the earth's crust.

    Not really an in depth answer I realize but the bottom line is that quartz is so common on earth that it is incorporated into every type of rock...not just sedimentary ones.
