Why is "Zzz..." symbolic for sleep?

You know, like in cartoons, if someone is sleeping on a bed, they have a little "zzz..." above their heads...

I mean, I don't really know anyone out there who snores like that...

Try breathing out through your teeth.

The sound of Zzz comes out. Most comic drawers have a mirror beside their desk and before they draw, they act out the action.

Zzz is like a comical way to sleep, with your mouth open.

And face it: you couldn't have had it any other way.

Sss or Mmm just sounds plain wrong.
