Why is red wine traditionally sold in green bottles,?

  1. Because green helps keep the light out of the bottle, that way it does not get rid of the flavor.

    Green bottles block more UV rays and reds are traditionally thought of as aging wines, were as whites are thought to be drinking wines. Keeping the reds safer for longer periods.

    OR

    The average person couldn't tell you if a wine was red... white or freakin' green. So wine manufactures sucked down their pride and put the whites in pretty clear bottles.

    Green glass would allow a limited spectrum.

    The red wine narrows this spectrum even further to the extent that a bottle of red in a green bottle is almost opaque.

    This means minimum light reaching the wine itself.
