Why is religion detemining the definition of marriage?

Question

My entire life I have been told that church and state are to be seperate. This makes sense being that there are so many religions out there. But when it comes to g*y marriage everyone keeps referring back to different religious definitions of it. And I believe the definition to begin with was based on religious beliefs. We need to decide as a state filled with many different people what is fair to us as a people, putting aside our religious beliefs.
