  1. omg what are you getting all that info from? or are you from russia? i'm writing this for the fifth time today :

georgians just entered tskhinvali to protect the georgians living there. tskhinvali is said to be russian but there still are living georgians there. they were shooted for whole 4 days and then the georgians entered the region. and that was all the russians wanted to enter georgia passing through roki , and saying they were trying to protect their people they started bombing the capital of the country and other cities. seeing as you ask that question i don't think you have a full view of the situation. i have cos i'm georgian, a proud one, and the one who lost friends who were trying to save ppl in the willages and cities which russians entered or bombed... just stop saying that c**p please!! and my advice - don't visit russian web sites for information

  2. Because Russia looks like the bully here because they are much bigger.

  3. maybe because things weren't the way u say.

  4. There is alot of controversy about what russia attacked and how russia attacked.

Certain ports have been damaged or destroyed and a few other places have been bombed and they both have little to do with ossetia struggle to independence.  Naturally an investigation is in order, if it will be able to happen.

We are talking about Russia, BTW. You know the country that just changed from the USSR. Not that the country of Georgia has been a perfect angle, but US friendly countries will be forgiven. Like China.

  5. Because the media can get more ratings if they play it out that the big bad Russians invaded all small innocent democratic country.

AND ( heres what most people dont know ) Theres a oil pipeline running through Georgia that transfers oil to the rest of Europe, this is one of the only pipelines that Russia doesn't control. So they are trying to either destroy it, or take control of it so they have 100% control over the oil that goes to Europe

    Oil = Power.

  6. Russia is getting punished because … it is Russia.

The current Georgian government is a puppet government installed as the result of a coup, which made an American lawyer a president and a French ambassador a Foreign Minister. The whole point was to have an anti-Russian regime that we can manipulate at will. Incidentally, the home-grown democratic forces in that country were shoved aside (with a few suspicious deaths) by the new rulers. Georgian army was supplied and trained by our military and had to pay for this by sending 2000 men to Iraq. If the top Georgian honcho is opening his mouth, it means that Cheney has moved his finger. And no one likes his puppets torn apart. Incidentally, I noticed that the price at the pump was going down for two weeks now. I guess, the big oil was not happy with that and made the right phone call. And the Georgian pawn was moved.

As for why Russians were in the region to start with: for the same reason there are peacekeeping troops all over the world. They had an international mandate (agreed upon by Georgia) to keep Georgians and Ossetians from killing each other. Although Russians are not free from criticism, the region saw only minor skirmishes in the last fifteen years. About a month ago, US marines finished a major training session for the Georgian troops. As someone here mentioned, you do not amass your troops in several hours. (BTW, Russia had about 100K troops next to the region for many years, because of its borders there and the continuous unrest in Chechnya). Georgia was getting ready for a while. Finally, they used some of the countless small skirmishes as an excuse and annihilated the Ossetian capital. Ossetians were unprepared, as the Georgian president announced one of his “peace proposals” and a ceasefire just hours before the attack. The destruction of this city is well documented by the world press, not just the Russians. I do not know whether there were ethnic Georgians there, but Georgian artillery did not seem to care.

The difference between the Russian peacekeepers in Ossetia and the early NATO peacekeepers in the Balkans was that the Russians did not sit on their hands when their positions were overrun and the civilians were slaughtered. When Georgians realized that they have to face more than a few ragtag Ossetian villagers defending their homes and a few Russian tanks crossed the border, all the training was forgotten and, according an NPR report, Georgian army ran “in a haphazard way”.  Imagine Sudanese army running from Darfur if the peacekeepers there ever choose to move their fingers. To make sure that the Georgian attack cannot continue, Russia bombed several Georgian military bases. They also stupidly missed and dropped one bomb over an apartment complex in Gori. Happens to us in Afghanistan all the time. Now Georgia is whining that it is small and powerless, and no one remembers the thousands of slaughtered Osseians. They also seem to be surprised that when the Ossetians are coming back to their villages and see the corpses of their relatives driven over by Georgian tanks, the Ossetians want to repay Georgians for this “visit.”

When NATO went into Yugoslavia and bombed Serbia far beyond Kosovo, it was hailed as a humanitarian mission. When we took over Grenada because some American tourists were harassed there, it was a defensive action. When Russia keeps its peacekeeping promise and protects its citizens (many dwellers of South Ossetia are Russian citizens), it is made a culprit. Because it is Russia, and for the last century it’s the patriotic duty of every American to hate it, however stupid a lie our government feeds us to sustain this hate.

P.S. Incidentally, our European allies are not bound by this rule, and their press paints a much different picture of this war.

  7. Why does Russia have peace keepers in territory that happens to be part of Georgia?  No nation or body of international nations recognize Ossetia as an independent country except for Russia so why did the Russians have peace keepers there and if it is as they claim an indepedent country why did the Russians make the people their Russian citizens?  So if California decide to secede and revolted against the US then the Russians could unilaterally recognize them, make them Russian citizens and then send in Russian troops to protect the independent country that they recognize but no other nation or the UN?  To really et it straight Ossetia and the other province were both made part of Georgia by the Soviet Union after the communist took power so how can they now say they aren't part of Georgia but independent or part of Russia.  The Russians are upset because Georgia is pro western and wants to join NATO and by setting an example they can stop them and make other countries who used to e part of the Warsaw Pact or the Soviet Union nervous about what happens to them if they get too friendly with the west or want to join NATO.

  8. Most people are stating their opinion only based on their knowledge of the events of the past several days.

You have to look back further one and a half decades ago. Osetia and Abkhazia wanted to be independent from Georgia. The central government of Georgia proposed a referendum to settle the issue. The people of those regions voted and the majority won in favor of independence. The Georgian government refused to accept the results. Osetia and Abkhazia resorted to armed struggle against the central government. The Georgian government used military force to fight the rebellion. An armed conflict erupted, but barely noticed in the news, as the world's attention was focused to the unrest in the Balkans (Kosovo, Bosnia). Both provinces appealed to the UN of their plight and asked for UN peacekeepers to protect them from the military's attacks, but the UN ignored them and took no action. The two provinces then asked Russian assistance. Russia took actions on their behalf, resulting in the 1992 agreement that ceased the hostilities. Russia proposed to take the peacekeeping tasks, as the UN didn't assign any peacekeepers to that region. Both provinces and the Georgian central government signed the agreement. The two provinces conducted their affairs autonomously without intervention from the central government as part of the agreement. That's the de-facto situation that existed from then on until the present, before the crisis began. However, three months ago the UN (upon the US and the EU's own initiatives) aprroved and declared Kosovo as an independent state, finally separating it from Serbia. This was good news to the two Georgian provinces. Brightened by that prospect, the two provinces revived their clamor for independence, this time with more vigor.

This agitated the president of Georgia. Then five days ago, he decided to re-take the two provinces by force. The next events that followed are what we now see in the news.

The issue now is this. If Kosovo was granted its independence, then why not Osetia and Abkhazia?. They had been struggling for this just as long as Kosovo did. They have the right to their own self-determination too. And why did the US took sides with Georgia on this issue, a position totally opposite to what it stood for in Kosovo?. I don't want to accuse anyone of being hypocritical, but these are the true facts.

  9. Georgia responded to the multiple provocations and sniper warfare. Do you expect  the whole world to believe that Russia  could transport 350-500  tanks, hundreds of  planes, and tens of thousands of soldiers in 2 days?

They were clearly preparing for the conflict with a copy cat scenario  - we all have seen it when Stalin attacked Finland and Hitler attacked Czechs. I do not believe that Georgians massacred 2000 civilians.

  10. firstly Georgia hasbnt started the was, cat never angers the tiger

and second, coupla minutes ago Russians attached Senaki, thts not even closer to South Ossetia, is it sensible? Russia declares hes for peace ( weird there are lotta methods for peace but not military actions, but ok, lets leave this subject) and attaches Senaki and sinks some Georgian ships,,,, Now when Sarkozy is negotiaiting with the ooresident of Georgia Russian does everything possible to prevent freedom and peace in whole Geogia

    !!!!!!!!!!!!
