Its the job of the VP to do that.  They end up sort of acting as the attack dog for the Presidential candidate.  They can get down and dirty, so that the presidential candidate can remain clean.  Biden did something very similar in his speech, and if he had known about Palin, he would have gone after her at the time as well.  Its just politics as usual, you'll get used to it.

Sidenote - not to be picky or anything, but the word you were looking for was entails, not entitles.    Just trying to be helpful - not snarky or anything.
