  1. Because it is the furthest the English can get from Wales and Scotland!

  2. It started in Tudor times with the growth of maritime exploration and the birth of the British Empire. South East England had the oak tree forests suitable for building warships, the charcoal and ironworks to cast cannon, and the seaports to build and harbour England's Navy. London grew initially as a major port and trade centre, and rapidly expanded to accommodate the financial and administrative needs of Great Britain and it's Empire.

When the Industrial Revolution started much of South East England's industry moved to the coal mining and iron ore regions of the Midlands and Northern Britain, and South East England became a "cleaner, greener land" and a very desirable place to live. The climate was the most pleasant available in the UK, the countryside and coastlines were attractive, London was the most prosperous city in the world and an almost unlimited source of employment.

Victorian England was faced with a hugely overpopulated "Dickensian" London with massive slums and unhealthy environment. The railways, followed by the roadways, pushed the population of London further and further into the home counties and the South East. Two world wars kept South East England at the centre of attention and the past 60 years have seen continued population growth nurtured by the South East's aura of affluence and it's proximity with London and Continental Europe,

  3. The Thames River, for one Im sure.  Everyone on the British isles had to have immigrated from the rest of Europe.  It makes sense that denser populations are closer to the equator and to Africa than they would be to the poles.

  4. Well I think London probably contributes to that a little bit...
