Why is southren ohio so much like the south?

I have a cousin who lives there and its pretty much like being home in S.C just diffrent weather.

When it comes to weather and people...consider southern Ohio is not that far from places typically considered "Southern". Right across the river is Kentucky, and slightly farther south are Virginia and Tennessee, both associated with the South.

Still, Ohio is a big state, and its geographical and popular similarities with the South are tempered with historical differences in economy, trade routes, transportation, and even language.
