  1. To date, there have been a total of 17 deaths in NASA spacecraft fires and explosions (3 Apollo 1, 7 Challenger, 7 Columbia) out of slightly over 100 flights, with 2-7 astronauts per flight.  The mortality rate is approximately 3%.  (This is roughly equivalent to driving a car twice per day and having an average of two fatalities per month.)  The Russian rate is even higher.  There have not yet been enough non-government space flights to estimate the future mortality rate.
