  1. People naturally gravitate toward things they are good at. There are some students that are better at sports than they are at education. I think that things like sports and the arts are good because it gives students more opportunities.

  2. Sports is not an alternative to learning. It is valuable in that it does teach (sometimes) teamwork, sportsmanship, and tenacity. Physically it augments strength and increases endurance but it is NOT a substitute for knowledge.

Unfortunately, the spectator sport society which we have built has placed an inordinate value on ball players so that one who has talent on the playing field need not have any other learning.

  3. I think that you are asking this - Why is sports, band and clubs called Extra-Curricular Activities?

Each state has a basic curriculum which includes the core subjects.  Extra-curricular activities support the student learning with optional activities like sports and marching band etc.  They teaching a lot of really good thinks like cooperation, sportsmanship, dealing with competition and hard work.  Students who take part in exta-curricular activities are often better students because they learn organization etc.  Community and church activities also build these skillls in kids.

Just like extra-curricular activities are fun so can a good teacher provide education through fun means.
