why many huge companies still deforests many forests when they know forests are important to reduce carbon present in the environment? is the government and other organizations isn't doing anything about that? take the amazon for example. many parts of it are being deforested. there are some laws prohibiting deforestation but why do the deforestation in some parts of the world could not be stopped?

  3. Extremist groups share a common perception about the world. They are anti-science, anti-technology, anti-trade, anti-globalization - not just free trade, but all trade.

People who embrace extremist views and philosophies believe all large machines are inherently evil, and - worse - science is used to justify positions "that actually have nothing to do with science."

These viewpoints are naive, including the oft-stated wish to return to a "Garden of Eden." How ironic, that these same people use cell phones, laptops and jet planes as the main tools of their trade.

  4. they are right. the companies doing that don't care for the environment, they just care about money, investment, and anything to do with money

  5. To put food on your table and a roof over your head.

  6. GREED

    LUST FOR $$$

    IGNORANCE

    EGOCENTRICITY

THE SAD BELIEF THAT HUMANS ARE THE MOST ADVANCED BEINGS IN THE UNIVERSE AND THAT WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO EXACTLY AS WE PLEASE WITH NO THOUGHT OF ANY CONSEQUENCE TO OUR OTHER PLANT/ANIMAL LIFE WITH WHICH WE CO-EXIST. MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUS , IGNORANT IDIOT ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH...

  7. Sadly I believe greed is one of the top reasons we are losing our rainforest's and prairie lands everywhere in the world. Governments allow this to happen not to mention we are so overwhelmed with overpopulation and hunger. We lose a lot of forests land for farms for families that need food. We cannot blame them. However, it it government farms and those run by huge conglomerates who just don't care enough  to watch over what damage they do in order to stop it.

We do have the power to help our earth. With knowledge and caring.

  8. Because the timber products are valuable.  Timber companies who own land and are in business for the long haul will manage their forests on a continuing yield basis, but not everybody does this.

  9. In north America there is two trees planted for every one tree cut down, this has been going on for many years, we have more trees today then we did 100 years ago. Trees are a renewable resource, if managed, we can have a endless supply of wood products. Just remember,  these people that harvest and plant trees, are supporting there families and countless other industries. Without wood products, we would not have the quality of life we have.  As for other countries, they can be tot how to manage there forests.

  10. the story isn't so simple, in my opinion.

As a scientist, I've seen firsthand some of the clearcutting going on in the Amazon basin. I've also seen successful and sustainable logging up in Maine.  Logging isn't about 'huge companies' so much as it is about thousands of small companies here in the west, and a half-dozen big ones that handle the planning and marketing.

Things are changing.  in ecology, nothing is stable, even old-growth forest, which in itself is ecologically destined to be cleared through forest fires. Old-growth forest is loaded with dead material, and fire cleans and clears the land. This is the end and beginning of the ecological cycle for forests.

So why let it go to waste? We are rapidly coming to a point in the west where the perceived value of large tracts of virgin forest outweighs the value of the timber produced. At this point, the old-growth forest will be preserved.  Be patient- we're getting to that point, here in the US. In Europe, it's mostly too late. Lots of fields over there.

Elsewhere it's another story. Everyone's concerned about deforestation in the tropics. The Amazon basin is a good example. Now, as it happens, I've traveled around Amazonas state in Brazil. It's incredibly poor. The people there largely view the forest as a resource to be used to bring them into a better economic situation. Who are we, who are busy exploiting our own forests, to tell these people not to do what they want with theirs?  It may be big, corrupt companies at the helm, but they've still got workers who are just trying to feed their families.  People aren't going to listen to hypocracy. They'll listen to money, however, and this is a problem- the state-controlled logging companies in Brazil are trying to be guided by smart growth of the industry, but illegal logging is an issue- especially since the exotic hardwoods illegally cut in the tropics always end up in the US and Europe, where the noisiest finger-pointers quickly scoop up the wood for their home projects.   Tough subject.
