  1. The original term applied only to men who were called "Sugar Daddies."  They were men who made a fortune in Cuba, Latin America and the Lesser Antilles growing sugar cane for American soft drinks and other products.  Women who worked in the fields yearned for a rich sugar heir -- a sugar daddy -- to rescue them from the drudgery of picking crops all day long.

    Eventually it came to pass that rich women with male parasites -- excuse me, I mean hangers-on -- would be called "sugar mamas."

  3. It's the opposite of a sugar daddy (a man who provides money or other favors in exchange for sexual relations).
