Why is sulphuric acid not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI?

  1. Sulfuric acid oxidizes KI to I2:

    H2SO4 + 2KI -----> I2 + K2SO3 + H2O

    (You might get SO2 or other reduced sulfur compounds, but the idea is the same).

    This will obviously be unsuitable for a reaction involving the KI...
