It depends where you are. Where I live nobody likes swimming, but I know about 100 miles east of here there are teams that have 500+ swimmers on them. I'd say that it's fairly popular in the United States because its a fast-paced competitive event. Also, much of the country is surrounded by oceans, or covered with lakes and rivers.

Also, its fun.

Because there are many good swimmers in the U.S.

However, let me ask you, what are you comparing swimming to? The most popular sports in the U.S. by far are football, baseball, basketball and in individual sports - boxing. If you are talking about countries, swimming is popular in Russia too, for example.
