  1. It's an olympic sport and thus recognized internationally and gets more media attention than any other art. Both the ITF and WTF operate internationally.

  2. Taekwando lends itself to be essayer to teach than some other esoteric arts. It is a popular Olympic sport. It was popularized by returning veterans of Vietnam conflict. I personally like it mostly because it was my first art.

There are a few other arts out there that I think are just as great.

My personal belief is the best art is the one you will devote the time and energy at to become great at.

  3. I believe Tae Kwon Do is the most popular martial art because the kicks Tae Kwon Do has are flashy compared to other kicks in other martial art. For example, kicks such as tornado kicks and spinning back kicks are difficult to execute but once done correctly, it does lot of damages and at the same time, it looks pretty cool compared to Muay Thai, Savate, or Karate kicks.

  4. Tae Kwon Do was developed in 1950 by General Choi (yes he was a 'real' general).  It is not hundreds of years old.

TKD is a military style that eliminates any fancy 'soft' techniques (e.g. pressure points or redirecting your opponent's energy back to him) and totally emphasizes powerful punches and a lot of powerful kicks to the head and body.  TKD believes that no matter where you hit your opponent, it should take him out.  Sort of like shooting somebody with a .44 magnum, it really doesn't matter where you hit him, even a nick with a .44 magnum will take off an arm.

TKD philosophy is to utilize the most powerful part of your body (your leg) against the most vunerable part of your opponent (his head).  Because it is a military style, TKD was designed to be utilized while wearing a full army uniform with back pack and holding a rifle.  Therefore you kick with your boot to your opponents helmet/head, snapping the neck.  And that is the main reason why TKD is 70% high kicks.

TKD is particularly suited to long legged, tall Americans.  TKD is relatively easy to learn.  It is very well marketed here in the States.  And a lot of American soldiers stationed in Korea receive TKD training.

  5. It's popular because of its availability. I can go to any strip mall where I live, and point out a Taekwondo school.
