  1. It could be that the thermostat is faulty.

If it keeps cooling it means it doesn't reach the set temp.

Use something else to measure the temp like a liquid in glass thermometer.

Otherwise turn the thermostat to both extremes and see what it does. If it doesn't switch off replce the unit.

  2. if the thermostat is old replace it if its fairly new than you have to check your duct work in the attic or in your crawlspace maybe you have a whole or disconnected duct hose where the air enters your rooms causing the house temperature not to meet its set temperature therefor the thermostat will not kickoff also check your contact switch inside your a/c unit  it maybe stuck

  3. the t-stat is the control if its not getting to temp it wont shut off you have a problem with your system call a HVAC tech thats from a good HVAC tech

  4. HVAC Tech.:  The CALL lever ( the one that sets the temperature you want the room to be) might be broken inside the thermostat. You probably need a new one. I like the old style WHITE_RODGERS and the HONEYWELLs way better than the new programmable ones with their batteries and instructions NO ONE understands.

  5. Sounds like a bad stat. It happens. Replacing it isnt hard, just be sure to turn off the power and mark the wires as you take them off. Transfer them to the new stat and you'll be in business. They make some really cool ones now so have fun.
