So i got this canon eos 400d a few months ago. i got this camera because i wanted a digital slr and the 400d seemed like a good choice for a beginner. i just want to take some decent photographs when i need to. Yet everytime i try to take a photo there is something wrong with the resulting image. I try all sorts of different settings and im using the stock lense (18-55mm). i know im not a master photographer but i never considered myself terrible so its disturbing me when i check the photos on the computer and they turn out really rough. i was under the impression that when i turned it on id be able to take some decent photos right off the mark. at the current time im afraid to use it over the smaller pentax camera for fear all my photos will be rubbish. Can anyone help me?

  1. the camera may be bad although its rare for canon. make sure you are using the auto settings and reset the camera to it's defaults. try a different lens if possible to rule out the camera body being the issue. it is frustrating when a cheap point and shoot turns out better than an expensive slr but keep in mind that is what they were made to do..."point and shoot" and your slr is made for a more manual approach. keep playing with it and it will get better and you will love your slr!

  2. Noise is caused by the ISO (sensitivity) setting is set too high. It should be 100 or 200, higher if you taking photos in low light.

  3. Hmm..

Did you change the default settings from the factory default settings? You need to if you didn't...

You need to change the size to ' L' Which means Large

You need to change the Quality to ' Fine '

If you have the image quality set to normal, the images aren't going to be that good, and if you have the size of the image set to small, the images are going to come up blurry because they were meant to be used as windows live messenger icons and so forth. Large photos can be used for anything, and can be blown up to 8" x 10". you can email me if you can't figure it out, i'll love to help you out :)

Now, you say there's a lot of noise, which setting do you have it on, an auto mode? or the manual mode.? when you use the auto mode, the camera can kick up the ISO, to get a better shutter speed, and do other bad things to the image. However, on the manual mode, you can do this all yourself, and keep the ISO to 100, to keep the images practically noise-free and perfect, Do you know how to manual expose and image?

there's a video or shutter and aperture....

try to use the manual mode, however, if you're using it now, and the images are bad, perhaps you're not setting up the image correctly

    a) don't use shutters under 1/18

    b) don't use ISO over 800

you can use the video as reference
