Why is that song, "the scientist" (by Coldplay) called that?

one of my very favourite songs by Coldplay is called "the scientist" but doesnt have anything to do with the song. whats the story behind that?

The song was written about one of the groups friends who was going through a bad break-up. It is also loosely based on a short story about a scientist who spent his whole life so involved with with his work that he passed up his chance of falling in love and by the time he realized his mistake it was too late and he had lost the love of his life because she had already passed away. It's both a beautful, yet sad song.

Coldplay is known for having weird lyrics, song titles, etc. Its just what they do.

Well I put some thought into it a few years ago when we were required to bring in a song with an unusual subject/lyrics for my honors english class and I brought this one in.  

I was very confused by it so I asked my teacher what he thought the song was about and he said something like this; the song is about love and when one is in love or falling in love, its like they are going through events and procedures like a scientist so love is like an experiment and when it does not work out you go back to the start just like a scientist must return to the beginning...or something like that.  

Anyways whatever you or I or anyone thinks of it, its still an awesome song : )

I think that Chris Martin of Colplay tried to compare falling in love with science, because both can be complicated. Such as the lyric "I was just guessin', at numbers and figures, pullin the puzzles apart", is like saying, I want things to work out between us, but I dont know what to do to make it work.

This is also one of my favourite songs too! Chris Martin is a great writer.
