we know that the color of a white flower is affected when you let it absorb food doloring with water but why is that that when you water plants, the color of the soil does not affect the color of the flower? we had this (flower, food coloring and water) as our experiment but the question just popped into my mind because we didn't have this as one of our objectives so we don't know the answer.

  1. the particles in soil are larger and the plant breaks them down for food while the particles in food coloring are very small and can be absorbed into the plant without being broken down-

  2. My guess is it depends on the size of the atoms of the substance, how it combines (reacts) with the water molecule and hence the sap in the plant. Soil is a combination of many things like organic material, microorganisms, fertilizers etc and hence the color would reflect this. The atoms of this combination can range in size and may not be reactive with water (attach themselves to the water) although water is a transport medium. In humans, for example, we sweat alcohol (and tobacco) molecules (smells when overdrank) but not soda molecules...

  3. it is because plants have a filtering system just like kidneys, etc. in humans by means of wich they cn absorb n utilise only those substances required fr its growth n normal functioning. since they absorb thru roots these filters are located throughout d root system n stem called as sieve cells ( actually xylem tissue)

so if in the supplied water there is ny unwanted substance the plant wud simply nt accept it or even let it enter into itself! the plant's dna has genes fr the particular colour of the flower, or be it fr ny part of the plant. the gene has already decided it n by no means will it allow nything to change it.

only sexual reproduction or mutations caused by radiations can cause a change coz it direcly affects the genes n alters it.
