  1. Probably because 0 comes before 1 and yet I have seen lots and lots of phones where 0 is at the bottom rather than before 1

  2. Because the first phone models used the mechanical crank to dial a number. One pulse of the crank is equivalent to the number 1. Two crank pulses means 2.. and so on. A zero can't be a no pulse crank so they assigned 10 crank pulses for zero.

Since then, that standard and number arrangement is followed even for digital phones.

  3. It's another one of those Telephone company games they are playing with us.

  4. Man learnt to count on his fingers.

He started with 1 and was stuck when he reached 9 as he still had one more finger left.

So he called God to help him.

God, in his infinite wisdom, having created the entire world from nothing, gave him this nothing, ie. zero, to make 10.

That is why 0 comes after 9 and not before 10.

    :)
