Why is the American flag patch on soldier's uniforms backwards?

the patch is usually about 3x5" and is located on the shoulder. as far as i have observed, it is always backwards. why?

  1. As a soldier walks forward, the flag is pointed as if it's on a pole headed into battle. No joke.
