  1. Black Forest is a literal translation of Schwarzwald - and the area got the name because its forests are so dark green they can seem almost black, especially when the sky is overcast.


  2. The name refers to the heavy stands of fir on the upper slopes.

  3. Parts of it are so dense with fir and pine trees, it's dark.  That's basically it.
