  1. Actually, its official title is The Open Championship. Check their website: that's what it says at the top.

The Open Championship predates the US Open by 35 years (1860 v 1895).

It's only to distinguish it from the US Open that American writers and such call it the British Open.

It is more nearly a "World Open", having players from thirty countries. The Royal And Ancient, which sponsors the tournament, is the governing body of golf for all of the world except the United States and Mexico (which are governed by the USGA).

  2. It has always been "The Open" everywhere in the world except the US.  So its not  just now being called "The Open".

  3. Because it was the first Open Championship, thus, it was "The Open."  We here in America call it the British Open to distinguish it from the US Open.  However, the US Open should never just be called "The Open."

Think of it this way.  The MLB championship is simply called "The World Series."  However, you also have the Caribbean World Series, the College World Series, and the Women's College World Series.  Just because you have all these other "World Series" doesn't mean that the real World Series needs to call itself "The MLB World Series"

  4. It's the original golf open.
