Why is the British govt acting as though they want Ukraine, Georgia, & South Ossetia to join the EU when the ?

people of Britian and most of Western Europe do not want any more countries to join the EU after Poland and Romania and immigration from those countries

If you don`t know,South Ossetia and Abhasia are unrecognised republics,they recognised only by Russia,and soon,as our government channels says(but I don`t believe them),they may be recognised by Belarus and China,so they won`t join the EU.Ukraine and Georgia...Mayby...

The laws of the Soviet Union said,that if the Union breaks up,the autonomous republics(South Ossetia and Abhasia.for example) have the same rights,as the soviet republics.So they may be independent.

Because we have benefited from joining the union (Ireland, although the EEC -  the original EU, was in it's infancy at the time, I wonder now, would they include us today ?) and it has helped us immensely.

These particular regions need help, and they need friends, not just in war times -  therefore we should help.

By helping them to help themselves this will reduce the influx of immigration - this is a fact.

I think the British are just going along with the majority. And I think they are wrong.The problem is not so much about joining the EU but about joining NATO. Commonsense should tell them that the Russians are going to be upset and worried with NATO pushing right up to their borders and recruiting nations that previously belonged to the Warsaw Pact - the Russian led opposition to NATO. That was the Cold War and we do not want that to start again. How would the US have responded if Mexico had joined the Warsaw Pact !  And look what happened when the Russians tried to put missiles into Cuba in President Kennedy's time.

I can't really say it bothers most people. I think East Europeans are more likely to migrate to other neighbouring countries where they are less likely to have language problems.

Peter: Why does everyone give Russia a pass? So what if NATO goes right up to their borders. Russia has no right to make that decision for the former, remember FORMER, Soviet republics.  What's the point of them being independent if Russia still gets to call the shots?  Wake up people.
