  1. Why not?

  2. Buckingham Palace started as a rectangular house and through a series of additions it developed into the shape it is today, a building with a central courtyard (not uncommon for palaces which were built in one stage).

Through a series of renovations and building projects, Buckingham House was extended and then had wings added which projected to the front, creating a forecourt with building on three sides. During the reign of Queen Victoria, the fourth wing, which has the famous balcony in the centre, was added, enclosing the forecourt and making it a full courtyard.

  4. Add ons. Wings were added as time went by.

Takes a long time to build a stone castle, so they all start with a basic structure that gets added to when there is time and money to do so.
