well, there ARE crazies out there who would do them harm, and, of course, there are those of us who are sane who would protest and get our own voices heard, and not just the voices of the rich and powerful who've managed to buy their way into the system.

Since many politicians including Obama have relieved death threats it good measure to have the protected.

If you do recall during the inauguration of Bush a large section of street was cordoned off and lined with armed guards.  Even with all this security he was advised not to do the traditional walk to the white house.

Politicians would not need as much security as they do if people would stop trying to kill them.

Because Democrats are an inherently violent group.  Look at all the big riots and civil disturbances over the last several decades.  You don't see very many Republicans in that mix.
