It was moved to a Saturday in 1995. Previously it had been run on the first Wednesday in June but the shift to a Saturday was made in the face of falling attendance. However, there was still a price to pay because while the race now draws six-figure crowds to Epsom, the days when it was guaranteed space on the front and back pages of newspapers have been eroded as it has had to compete with other sports for such coveted coverage.
