  1. Everybody keeps forgetting the words.

  2. SteveN, nailed it once again!

  3. CBC is having budget issues, and they are in a conflict about having to pay the royalties for playing the song each time.

Dolores Claman wrote and still owns the right to the piece of music being played on H.N.I.C. and CBC has to pay $500 each time they use the song in their broadcast.

They have been in a bit of a legal battle over how many times they have been playing it and what constitutes and "official" occurrence of the song on the show.

However, the contract expired for the rights to the theme music on June 4th when Detroit won the Stanley Cup, and CBC have apparently made it clear that they do not want to continue paying that amount for the music.

Ms. Claman offered to renew at the same price. CBC refused. CBC offered to buy the theme music outright so they don't have to pay rights for it anymore, but Ms. Claman felt the offer that CBC gave was well under what the music was worth.

So we have a standoff. Either, CBC will cave under pressure from the fans about the music, or Ms. Claman will take a lower offer, or we will be hearing some new theme music next year, probably composed by someone at the CBC on their synthesizer so they don't have to pay for it anymore.
