It is an unnatural group, containing members that all originated (independently) from more than one ancestor or evolutionary line, and are unified only by the fact that they are unicellular.  Some are photosynthetic and some are not.  They just really don't have a lot in common.  This is a link to a paper with an excellent discussion of the subject:  http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pageren...
