  1. Adam almost has it right.

The reason is that its using a turbo-jet engine that was originally designed for the 727 (among others). Its a fairly inefficient design, and because it's using the jet to create all of the thrust, instead of a fan, it generates more noise doing it.

  2. Because it uses a low bypass fan and most other airplanes use a high bypass fan

  3. It's probably because the engines are so large. If an engine is so large than it may not be able to use a muffler to muffle the sound. Also, the engines are so close to the airplane, so when you're inside it's easier to be heared. If you want some information on planes you could go to www.eaa.org which stands for Experimental Aircraft Association. You could also go to a local library or airport for information too.

  4. When it was designed it only had to meet stage 2 noise compliance . It was retrofitted to meet stage 3 . Most newer aircraft are designed to meet stage 4 when it comes around.

  5. Older technology.

The last one was built in the 1990's

  6. The MD 80 uses a low bypass turbofan  most of the thrust is from the air going through the core of the engine and not the fan there's  a small column of air surrounding the jet thrust they are quitter then straight turbo jets but not as quiet as a high bypass turbofan like on the DC10
