Why is the Metro centre (in Gateshead) called the Metro centre?

It's not near any metro's or metro lines. It has nothing to do with Metro's as far as i know. (the metro is the light rail network accross tyne and wear)

  1. The word "metro" doesn't necessarily mean a transport system.  It could also apply to a large urban area, or metropolis.

    Gateshead, though not a city, is within the metropolitan Council of Tyne and Wear.


  2. Perhaps it's something to do with Gateshead being a metropolis meaning city: a large and densely populated urban area; may include several independent administrative districts; "Ancient Troy was a great city"
