The NHL isn't full of egotistical @holes like this...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Paul-Pierce-says-he-s-the-best-player-in-the-wor?urn=nba,96670

But, this is exactly why most Americans don't like hockey, the players aren't out to promote themselves. Many Americans need their celeb fixes and their controversies, and the "other" leagues make their players out to be more of celebrities rather than athletes. Maybe the NHL would become more popular if Ovechkin and Crosby weren't so friendly and respectful of eachother, probably couldn't hurt if someone got arrested for dog-fighting either. BUT, the media vilified the NHL after the McSorley and Bertuzzi incidents, so I think if a player was dog-fighting, they might shut the league down completely.

  1. Quote from that article

"There's a line that separates having confidence and being conceited."

    -Paul Pierce

BWAHAHAHA! He's egotistical AND a hypocrite!

  2. The NHL could be better... but Gary Bettman won't let it.

  3. Hockey sucks boring, to many fights and after 1.5 hours the score is like 1-0 or something like that hockey is to violent and boring as h**l.

  4. because you like hockey better

  5. Yeah but during the McSorley and Bertuzzi incidents hockey was the top story on ESPN.I say s***w people that don't like hockey.Would you stop watching if the buildings were only 50% full?No and neither would I.I love hockey and not being one of the top 3 major sports in the US is not that huge a problem in my eyes.

Would you rather have had all the problems in baseball(steroids),basketball(egos) or football(DUIs) OR rather be the 4th biggest sport and have NONE of these problems?I'll take hockey any day of the week.

Tomjc-Funniest thing I heard aboot Bettman, not sure who said it (Tom Webster maybe)"They handed Bettman a puck and he tried opening it for an hour".

  6. I totally agree. Hockey is my favorite sport and I'm one of the few people in my school who like it. Everyone else is into baseball and football because they have "celebrities". Hockey is the best Major League sport because I think it's an actual sport. You're trying to score goals while 5 other guys are trying to shove you into the boards. With baseball, you can't do anything to the other team! Hockey is a sport where people respect each other. That's all I'm gonna say.

COMMIT TO THE INDIAN! LETS GO HAWKS!

  7. Because their commissioner and most of their owners don't know anything about the game?

Because most of their fans know even less about the game?

Or is it because the game is a joy to watch and while you don't have to have played the game to appreciate it, you can understand the skill required to compete because most people have attempted skating and can appreciate the skill required to do anything above merely moving and not falling.

I think it is better than other major sports leagues because the game is similar to but unlike all other team sports. The mixture of skills required to compete requires all round abilities for all players even goalies to rise above the mere norm.

  8. First of all, Crosby and Ovechkin should not be the faces of hockey.

Second of all, hockey is just an awesome sport. Hitting and fighting are awesome, espically on ice!

  9. its not

    the nba beats it

    and the nfl

  10. Hockey players play hockey because they love the game, its our life. Other athletes play their sports for the publicity and the glamour. Think about it, starting way back in middle school and high school they take up football or basketball or w/e other sport to get the chicks and all the attention from their peers. Hockey players have more passion for their sport than any other athlete. We also have the most class and sportmanship, which is why we are the only pro sport that shakes hands after games. And for those of you that think we have poor sportsmanship b/c of the fighting, we fight because of our passion for the game.

  11. Wow, some r****d up there called hockey boring. I guess he's never seen a hockey game. Hockey moves so much faster than other sports, and has a lot more intensity. It's beyond me how anyone would call hockey boring, let alone in comparison to other sports.

  12. Well, given how the other leagues keep trying to copy all that the NHL gets right, there's little question.

Hockey is much more of a team game than most of your other team sports; those that still play know that...let's face it, in the main, you bust your *** because it's expected by your teammates.  You play for the team, not individual glory.  You play so you can look each other in the eye after a tough loss, knowing everyone gave it 100% every shift.  Respect.  Courage.

99% of American sportswriters never played the game as kids; they never played shinny on a frozen pond; heck, most of them couldn't stand up on a pair of skates.  So it is a game foreign to them.  But they have all played baseball, football, or basketball.  And let's face it...when you're over 45, it's easy to mock that which you don't understand.  It's easy to have a laugh at guys that don't speak english that well, or some of us that pronounce things differently.

I'll take the worst hockey game over a 4-hour marathon of commercials for beer and ***** pills mixed in with a few meagre minutes of actual action (the NFL) any day, and I'd rather do almost anything over watching basketball.

  13. ya its better then other leagues. No 2am stip club shootings, no steriods, no refs who are fixing games to win bets, no sog fighting, ect ect.

    * There are americans in hockey. Alot of americans actualy like hockey. In the south they dont but in the north they love it

  14. Lots of Checking, Shooting and Fighting, Plus the Players keep a Low Profile Better then Baseball, Basketball and American Football Players do.

    Hockey Rules.

  15. That is complete opinion, but I do agree. Since the lockout, the NHL has done everything to ensure that the league would be profitable, hence the flexible salary cap. It certainly helps to have young stars in the league and I think that many of the fans appreciate the modesty of the NHL players. They aren't flambouyant gang-banging thugs and they dont talk c**p about other athletes. In my opinion, hockey fans are more knowledgable about the game they love and that makes the product even better.

  16. I agree, I heard a bunch of people say that about the lockout, it is because they are such @ss holes that they want hockey fans to suffer because they dislike the sport. All I have to say to that is the only reason people in football and baseball and basketball are so strong is because they are all on steroids, unlike hockey players (though I'm sure some hockey players are on steroids, but a very small percentage). A lot of it is, that you have to skate to be a hockey player so less young kids try it unless an older brother or a dad played or plays hockey. Soccer isn't very popular but amongst 1st graders it is, it just gets old. They are all @ss holes about it because they suck at it typically.

  17. the NHL is not only the best legue but it stands for the best sport. The reason its the best is because players play not for the money but because they love the sport.. players will take pay cuts to win (ex. hossa) the NHL is full of classy players tht know what life is about.. its about fun and enjoyment not soo much the money
