  1. The Platt Amendment was affixed to the 1904 Army Appropriations Act and allowed for Cuban self-rule as long as they:

    1) Did not accept foreign debt.

    2) Gave a chunk of land to the US for the purpose of a naval base (Guantanamo Bay).

    3) Allowed the US to intervene at will.

    It was unjust because it effectively made the people of Cuba slaves to America's will.  They couldn't rule their own land or make their own rules.

    The Platt Amendment was passed due largely to racism.  Americans were fearful of "another Haiti" (as in another free state governed by minorities) from emerging in the Western Hemisphere.
