MY mother is at this moment about to set sale on the Queen Mary 2 to New York. She leaves Southampton at 5.00 p.m. this afternoon. Unfortunately, l couldn't see her off personally but thought that l would watch the ship leave via the webcam, this is not to be, what a shame.

  1. Probably a security issue.

  2. Might be in part a security issue, but I'd bet it has more to do with bandwidth constraints.

Since data coming on/off the ship (including internet, telephones, and of course the web-cam) is transmitted via satellite, it's very expensive and the data "pipe" is pretty narrow.

The web-cam is considered lower-priority data than, say, phone calls to shore.  So by queuing the feed for an hour or more they can make sure it only uses the "pipe" when there's nothing more urgent.
